At Priestlands, we believe that English should empower young people, not just to succeed in exams, but to thrive in life. Our curriculum is built to inspire, challenge, and support every student to become a confident communicator, a thoughtful reader, and a creative, critical thinker.
Through reading widely and deeply, students are introduced to a diverse range of voices, stories, and ideas: from Shakespeare and Dickens to contemporary global writers. These texts build empathy, broaden horizons, and help students understand the world and their place within it while developing their cultural capital by encountering a rich blend of experiences and perspectives.
Language is power, and we equip our students with the vocabulary and communication skills they need to express themselves clearly and purposefully. Whether through imaginative writing, thoughtful analysis or engaging discussion, students learn how to shape their voice and use it with confidence.
English also fosters self-expression and emotional insight. Our students are encouraged to explore their identities, reflect on complex issues, and engage with challenging questions. This builds not only literacy but character. Above all, we want students to enjoy English: to see it not just as a subject, but as a lifelong toolkit for success.
