Food and Nutrition
Head of Food and Nutrition:  Mrs J Gillett

At Priestlands, we believe that Food Preparation and Nutrition should inspire students to develop a deep understanding of healthy eating, nutrition and culinary skills. We aim to equip every student with the knowledge, creativity and confidence to make informed food choices,
embrace diverse cuisines and lead healthy balanced lives both now and in the future.

Through practical work we support our students to develop their knowledge and understanding of nutrition, healthy eating, food preparation, hygiene, cooking techniques and sensory characteristics. We raise their awareness about the world around them and explore a range of
ingredients and processes from different culinary traditions (traditional British and international), to inspire new ideas or modify existing
recipes.

Finally we encourage them to have an understanding of the economic, environmental, ethical, and socio-cultural influences on food availability
and production processes.

By the end of KS4 students at Priestlands will:

  • Have a thorough understanding of nutrition, healthy eating and the functions of food in the body
  • Know how to plan, prepare and cook a wide range of balanced dishes using a variety of techniques and ingredients
  • Understand the science behind food, including food safety and food provenance
  • Have considered the principles of sustainability, seasonality and ethical choices
  • Have developed skills in independent research, time management and practical problem solving
  • Have evaluated and adapted recipes to suit dietary needs, cultural preferences and personal tastes
