Geography at Key Stage 3

Year 7: Discovering Places, People, and Perspectives

Lessons per fortnight: 3

In Year 7, students begin their geographical journey by exploring the world from a global to a local scale. They build strong foundations in geographical skills and start to understand how people and places are connected.

Autumn Term: Global to local & Seaside sensations

Students begin with a broad overview of the world before zooming in on our local area. They explore coastal landscapes, including iconic features like Old Harry Rocks, while developing their map skills and spatial awareness.

Spring Term: Africa: A continent of contrasts

This term focuses on the diverse physical geography of Africa and introduces key development concepts. Students explore the contrast between wealth and poverty and tackle big questions like “Is trade fair?”

Summer Term: Settlements & fieldwork

Students investigate urban life and the challenges of living in cities. They also conduct fieldwork in Lymington, collecting and analysing data on shopping habits and sustainability—bringing classroom learning to life.

Year 8: Understanding Our Changing World

Lessons per fortnight: 3

In Year 8, students deepen their understanding of global connections and the powerful forces that shape our planet. They explore how people interact with the environment and how these relationships are changing over time.

Autumn Term: Weather, climate & our impact

Students explore the science behind weather and climate, and how these systems affect our daily lives. They then examine how human activity is influencing the climate and the far-reaching consequences of these changes.

Spring Term: Migration & natural hazards

In the first half of the term, students study migration—its causes, impacts, and the complex debates surrounding it. In the second half, they investigate natural hazards such as hurricanes, earthquakes, and tsunamis, and how development levels affect their impact.

Summer Term: The Economy: Past, present & future

Students revisit key skills and knowledge from throughout Key Stage 3 before exploring the UK and global economy. They learn about different economic sectors, how they’ve evolved, and what the future might hold in a world shaped by robotics and AI.

Geography at Key Stage 3 is designed to be thought-provoking, relevant, and fun. It equips students with the knowledge and skills to understand the world—and to play an active role in shaping its future.
